If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, it is suggested that early treatment can increase the chances for successful treatment.
Diabetes diagnosis
If you have symptoms of diabetes, you have to tell your doctor who will order a battery of tests to find whether you have diabetes or how poor your blood sugar is. One or more of the following tests are used to find out if you develop type 1 diabetes or if the treatment is working.
1. Fasting blood glucose level(FBG)
A blood sample for a FBG test is collected after a period of being fasting for at least 8 hours. It is the most common test for diabetes that indicates the beta cells function and insulin levels. If FBG is higher than 126 mg/dl two times, you are diagnosed with diabetes.
2. Random blood glucose level
It is a test to measure blood glucose but it will not consider when you have your last meal. If it is higher than 200mg/dl, you may have diabetes. This test can be used in medical emergencies if a person is drifting into a diabetes-induced coma. In several minutes, this test can tell you the levels of blood sugar in the blood.
3. Oral glucose tolerance test
Different from the two tests, you need to drink a sugary fluid in order to measure the function of your pancreas. If you don't have diabetes, the high blood glucose will fall quickly after rising. But if you are a diabetic, blood sugar will rise sharply and be sustained because your pancreas can not produce enough insulin to regulate blood sugar.
If the glucose level is higher than 200 mg/dl after 2 hours, you are diagnosed with diabetes.
Hemoglobin A1C test
This test is used to diagnose diabetes and prediabetes. In most cases, it would more often be used for diagnosing type 2 diabetes. The normal range is less than 5.7 percent. If your A1C test result is between 5.7 to 6.4 percent, you are diagnosed with pre-diabetes. If the result is 6.5 or more, you develop diabetes.
Other test may be ordered if you have diabetes complications such as urine test or blood test.
