Higher-than-normal Blood Sugar Levels Can Lead to Kidney Failure Over Time, Research Says

Many people knew that diabetes is one of the common leading causes of kidney failure, but do you know who severe this condition is? And what is the rate that diabetes lead to kidney failure? Recent research shows that higher-than-normal blood sugar levels can lead to kidney failure over time, and it begins much sooner than previously thought.

The study involved over 1,300 patients aged from 50 -62 years old, who were followed for a median of 5.6 years. Of those people, 595 had prediabetes when the study began.

Prediabetes affects up to 35 percent of adults-- twice as many people as diabetes. About half of those with prediabetes develop diabetes within 10 years, and diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure. After adjusting for certain lifestyle factors and medications, the investigators found that patients with prediabetes had early signs of kidney damage, including high levels of a protein called albumin in their urine.

The research shows that the pathological process of kidney injury caused by elevated blood glucose levels starts in prediabetes, well before the onset of diabetes. So when people suffer from higher-than-normal blood sugar levels, they need to control the blood sugar and do regular test to observe their kidney function and avoid kidney failure.

What should you do once you get kidney damage with diabetes?
