What Causes Headache In Dialysis

Dialysis increases the expected lifetime of the patients with End Stage Renal Disease, but due to its terrible side effects, many patients prefer to die rater than dialysis. Headache is the most commonly seen side effect of dialysis, referring to hemodialysis here. It usually comes when dialysis is going to the end or after dialysis, and sometimes, it may become too severe to endure. Well then, what causes headache on earth in dialysis?

1. Poor control of blood pressure

One of the causes for headache in dialysis is the presence of hypertension during hemodialysis. And usually, the poor control of blood pressure is, the higher risk for headache during dialysis. Medicines like ACE inhibitors and ARBs can be used by kidey failure patients to control their blood pressure and with tight control of blood pressure, the occurrence rate of headache can be reduced greatly.

2. Dialysis disequilibrium syndrome

Another possible cause for headache among dialysis patients is dialysis disequilibrium syndrome. According to clinical studies, long dialysis duration, an effective dialysis and higher ultrafiltration rate all significantly increase the incidence of headache during dialysis. Under such a condition, asking dialysis technician to change the parameters or methods in dialysis helps to alleviate headache.

3. Fluid and electrolyte disbalance

Imbalanced fluid and electrolyte also contributes to headache. Kidney is responsible for regulating fluid balance and electrolyte balance. When kidneys shut down, excess fluid build up in the body and also electrolyte imbalance appears. Dialysis helps to remove excess fluid and electrolyte, but it can not work as well as our kidneys, so during dialysis, fluid and electrolyte disbalance may occur. Under such a condition, you need to change your daily fluid intake according to your dry weight and take some medicines to deal with electrolyte imbalance, so as to reduce the risk for headache.

4. Change of dialysis fluid

When dialysis fluid is changed, headache may also occur.

Lastly, headache is just one of the physical discomforts caused by dialysis. In some cases, apart from headache, patients may also suffer from some others like vomiting, muscle cramp, itchy skin, tiredness and sleep problems. (Consult our online doctor for proper management of these side effects)
